MUSIC VIDEO: LUCY ROSE ‘NO GOOD AT ALL’
“There’s a fair amount of self-doubt in this song, but positivity for the future too.”
NEW! Video from Lucy Rose for her new single ‘No Good At All’. Taking a step back in time, the video finds Lucy and her full live band performing in a 1970’s TV studio, complete with a pastel colour palette and confetti. The project is Lucy’s second collaboration with Dusthouse who previously produced her emotional video for ‘Nebraska’ which featured none other than Danny Dyer acting in drag.

Speaking about the song itself Lucy Rose has shared:  “No Good At All is the oldest song on the album and was written just before I went on my first trip to Latin America. When I wrote it, I was kind of feeling that maybe I wasn’t good enough for music and was re-thinking everything. Part of me wondered if maybe somewhere down the line somewhere (my great great great grand-daughter maybe?), there would be a girl who had a little bit of me in her and could achieve everything she wanted.

“But it’s also got an element of love to it too, finding the one to start a new life with who one day you could settle down with and have a family with.

No Good At All’ is the latest single to be lifted from Lucy’s forthcoming third album ‘Something’s Changing’, following the release of ‘Floral Dresses’ (ft. The Staves) and ‘Is This Called Home’.

Something’s Changing is released on the 7th July through Communion Records. The album will be accompanied by a stunning short documentary, acting as a fly-on-the-wall account of Lucy’s debut tour of Latin America last year. The trip, organised independently by Lucy with the help of her Latin American fans, became a huge inspiration for the record and the film is an intimate account of how it all came together.

The documentary is Lucy’s support act for a Worldwide Cinema Tour, of which she has already completed the Latin American and Indian legs. The UK leg will start in July following Lucy’s performance at Glastonbury festival later this month. Scroll down for a full schedule of remaining Worldwide Cinema Tour dates + all of Lucy’s UK/Irish festival appearances this summer.

Lucy is working once again with her fans and Bandsquare to organise the next phase of her worldwide touring schedule in January 2017. Fans are being asked to vote for their hometown for the chance to help Lucy decide her tour routing, more details available here: https://www.bandsquare.com/campaign/lucy-rose/landing

NEW ALBUM: LEIF VOLLEBEKK “TWIN SOLITUDE”

“By the time the last notes die away, all that’s left should be you,” Leif says. “And I’ll be somewhere else. And that’s ‘Twin Solitude’.”

Love this song – check out ‘Elegy’ the catchy heart thumping, soulful third track from the new album “Twin Solitude” to be released in 2017 from Leif Vollebekk..

Leif Vollebekk, the Montreal singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist, had hit a wall. In the midst of endless touring, Leif found himself retreating to his lonely hotel rooms after shows and listening to Nick Drake’s ‘Pink Moon’ alone in the dark. His own songs didn’t sound right and he felt the bright spots in his sets were the covers he’d end with: songs by Ray Charles or Townes Van Zandt. In this deep blue mood he booked a secret show at a Montreal dive bar, only playing covers with a band that rehearsed once. The experience led Leif to change his approach to songwriting: explore the ideas that came spontaneously to him, and let the songs shape themselves.  Soon the songs came pouring out of him. This approach is what created the lush, freewheeling and often devastating ‘Twin Solitude,’ out Feb 24 on Secret City Records.

“By the time the last notes die away, all that’s left should be you,” Leif says. “And I’ll be somewhere else. And that’s ‘Twin Solitude’. Leif’s third album features 10 delicate and expansive original songs, with lyrics that pour out of this singer songwriter that’s often compared to Jeff Buckley. Leif’s words lay on a bed of elastic instrumentation full of piano, synthesizer, guitar, rich electric bass and strings.

Several songs on the album came to Leif and were written in one sitting. ‘Into the Ether’, came to be while he was exploring a Moog synthesizer. ‘Elegy’ is a bedside soliloquy, of love slipping through fingers and came to Leif while he was riding his bike through Montreal. The meditative ‘Michigan’ was written on a half-tuned guitar and fully written as he was about to go to sleep. Other songs on the album capture the countless hours Leif has spent on the road, crisscrossing North America. ‘Big Sky Country’ recalls a trip to Vancouver with his family when he was young, never forgetting the expanse of Montana and listening to Ian Tyson’s song ‘The Gift’ in the car over and over again.

5. Big Sky Country

REVIEW: CAUGHT BY THE RIVER THAMES FESTIVAL

“Be More Fucking Empathetic Kate Tempest

I headed down to the Caught by the River Thames Festival last weekend, which was a small, friendly, yet relaxing festival hidden down a quaintly decorated winding path down the back of Fulham Palace Park. My highlight of the experience… without a doubt – was Kate Tempest ‘in conversation’ about her new book  ‘The Bricks That Built The Houses’ with Miranda Sawyer. Not only did she come across as wise and talented.. the confidence Kate exuded in front of a room packed full of people – of all ages was inspirational. She came across as the sort of person I’d like to be friends with. Down to earth, real, creative and thoughtful.

She had some good advice for the room… well. For me anyway… 1) “finish your ideas!”. And 2) “Be more fucking empathetic!”. She touched on various topics such as ‘female artists expected to be young, beautiful and engaged with broken hearts and shoes’. And whilst I love shoes.. I agree there is only a short amount of time one can spend admiring them before it can get boring. Very… boring. She also touched on that creative process. Well I am writing this as if you may know about it. That feeling that you aren’t quite where you want to be and it’s not quite going the way you want. But something she said that was quite interesting was ‘the minute you get it right. It’s the end… right?’.

And how important it is to ‘get out of tunnel vision’. To remember that it’s not just you that is going through whatever it is you’re going through. I believe it’s so important… to try to enjoy life and the imperfect journey placed at our feet. And hearing Kate Tempest reminded me of that. Another inspirational talker at the festival was Chris Packham who spoke about ‘winning being about not giving up.. no matter what happens.. that it’s not always about the finish line… it’s about focusing that anger and doing something creative with it’. So yes. I wasn’t expecting to come away so thoughtful from a festival. And whilst I craved some electro dance music….something I’m not too good at… is relaxing and just being. And remembering the importance of just sitting. And listening.

The Caught by the River Festival exuded a different energy than the burning fast paced rush and the now now NOW culture of festivals that I’m probably more used to. I’m not sure if this festival is running next year.. but I found it a relaxing cultural experience. And worth heading to if you have free time. And here are some short one minute interviews: Oh Ryley Walker… 🙂
